14 – 15 March 2014 : Joint Committee – London

The following events will be open to FBUA/UFBA members:

Friday
Following the Joint Committee Meeting, there will be a talk by FBUA member James Dunnett on the architect Erno Goldfinger at the AA. Goldfinger was Hungarian but trained in Paris and worked alongside Le Corbusier and others in the 1920s. He married an English heiress and moved to London where he did his most famous work. James is a well known architectural writer and has often written for the Architectural Review. He is a past Chair of DOCOMOMO-uk. He worked in Goldfinger’s office and has often given talks on Goldfinger and is currently writing a book on him.

The talk will be followed by dinner either at the AA or nearby.

Saturday
In the morning, we will be visiting Canary Wharf. We shall be able to look inside the workings of Crossrail and the new Canary Wharf Crossrail Station which are under construction. Numbers will be restricted and safety equipment will have to be worn. We shall also be visiting the Canary Wharf tower with an update on future plans for the area.

A lunch will follow at a local restaurant.

2014 Bursary application deadline

The Franco-British Union of Architects is inviting candidates to apply for the 2014 bursary. One bursary of up to £1,500 will be awarded to a suitable British candidate to extend their understanding of some aspect of architecture in the other country. The bursary is intended to assist with travel, accommodation, subsistence, and incidental expenses, relevant to the bursar’s topic, and incurred within Britain or France.  Applicants must be British nationals under 30 years of age at the date of application, and either architects or students at a recognised UK school of architecture who will have passed RIBA Part I.
