2014 Student Bursary awarded

We thank all the applicants for this year’s Student Bursary where there were some interesting topics. This year’s Bursaries have been awarded to Nicholas Harrington and Anna Raymond.

Nick, who is studying at the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow, will be exploring the friendship of Fernand Léger and Le Corbusier and the relationship between painting and architecture.

Anna, who is also studying in Glasgow, will be looking at innovative approaches to inclusive design, studying the design of access to cultural venues in Paris and Nantes.


March 2015 update:

We are now hoping that they will each make their presentations either at the Nantes Re-Union or the Joint Committee in Paris.

Money for the bursaries (£1500 each) comes principally from the interest from our specifically saved funds. In addition, this year we are very fortunate to have received an additional donation of £500 from Charles MacCallum’s family in memory of Charlie.

15 – 18 May 2014 : Re-Union in Plymouth

All FBUA-UFBA members will be welcome to join us. The Re-union will based in Plymouth this year with visits to Exeter and the Eden Project in Cornwall. In 2011 we were based in Le Havre. Both cities were so extensively damaged in World War 2 so that substantial re-planning was required – In Le Havre by Auguste Perret, who was also responsible for much of the architecture, and in Plymouth by Patrick Abercrombie and other architects. Members will be able to judge the relative successes for themselves. There is a huge naval tradition in Plymouth and the gala dinner will be held in HMS Drake, the Royal Navy’s land based headquarters. In Exeter we shall be visiting the beautiful cathedral and the Guildhall, one of the earliest surviving. We shall also visit the Award winning new Forum Building (Wilkinson Eyre) at the University and Castle Drogo (Edwin Lutyens) where we shall see the largest restoration project ever undertaken by the National Trust. During Saturday, we will be visiting the famous Eden Project in Cornwall. Events will conclude on the Sunday with a chance to further explore Plymouth and have lunch at the newly refurbished Theatre Royal.
